8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece (original tissue guard present, 9 plates on 7, and 5 maps (4 full-page) in the text, neat contemporary signatures on front free endpaper, free endpapers lightly browned, half-title lightly spotted' original blue cloth, upper board with gilt frame border, gilt back, gilt top, uncut, backstrip lightly chafed (without material loss) at head and tail else a very good, bright, firm copy.
The frontispiece reproduces the famous photograph of the first Archaeopteryx fossil found at Eichstadt and now in the BMNH. Nice copy of the first appearance of this classic treatise, one of the most important studies of the immediate post-Darwinian period. McCabe began his career as a Catholic priest, but his faith was diluted by a rebellious intellect and he spent the greater part of his long life as a rationalist author and lecturer, and leading light of the English Athiesm movement. The first edition is scarce, especially in this condition.
