6 vols., 8vo., with 6 frontispieces, very numerous plates and maps throughout; pictorial boards, brown cloth back blocked in red and lettered in gilt, brown endpapers, a near fine set in publisher's two illustrated board slip-cases, one case split at edges as often.
The set comprises Vol. I: The Gathering Storm; Vol. II: Their Finest Hour; Vol. III: The Grand Alliance; Vol. IV: The Hinge of Fate; Vol. V: Closing the Ring; Vol. VI: Triumph and Tragedy. The best modern edition of Churchill's account of the conflict he himself did so much to bring to a victorious conclusion. The work was first published between 1948 and 1954; here the text is that of the author's revised version of 1949. The slip-cases for this work are extremely tight and therefore often found with split edges. Cohen A240.32.
