Much-needed reissue of the earliest dedicated history of Shrewsbury, whose ancient name of Salop became the traditional title for the county of Shropshire as a whole. A burgess of Shrewsbury, Mathews compiled a diverse range of local history literature of which the present work, written in 1616 shortly before his death, is the most extensive. It provides an account of the town's origins, ancient names, history from Roman and Saxon times, economic growth and regional importance. VERY SCARCE.
