A very good example of the great romantic binder in his heyday, and only five years before his death. At this stage he was still working from Cassette 18 before his relocation to rue de Roule and collaboration with Bauzonnet. In his comparison of the three great craftsmen of the 'triumviri', Ramsden nominates Purgold as 'perhaps the best binder of the threeÂ…He is also, in spirit, as in name, the least French of the three'. (Ramsden, p.6).
