Collects twelve short stories, primarily supernatural rather than detective fiction, and issued not by Collins (the author's regular house) but by Odhams as a promotional feature. A Collins edition followed three years later. Arguably best known for its seventh tale 'Witness for the Prosecution' which evolved into a successful stage play and subsequently the basis of Billy Wilder's eponymous feature film (1957) starring Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton and Tyrone Power.
