Published in Batsford's well-known 'British Heritage' series with striking wrap-around dustwrapper artwork by Brian Cook. Crossley's classic account was first published in 1935. The substantially revised second edition was published just before the outbreak of war. The text was corrected, the county list of abbies made more complete and the index entirely remade and extended. The illustrations in particular were completely overhauled, omitting several and substituting others deemed more suitable or informative. In this wartime second impression, gone alas, is the laid paper of the earlier work, but this is a bright copy nevertheless.
