Boulle's classic WWII novel is the basis of David Lean's eponymous feature film (1957) starring Alec Guinness, William Holden, Jack Hawkins and Sessue Hayakawa. Arguably the first major movie to depict the sufferings of POWs on the Burma-Siam railway, it was awarded no fewer than seven Oscars.
