8vo., Second Edition, Three Hundred and Seventy-Third Thousand, with chromolithograph frontispiece, 11 fine chromolithograph plates, 10 full-page plates in monochrome and many hundreds of wood-engravings in the text, title and frontispiece lightly spotted, some very light and occasional age-marking in text; original green cloth, red leather back richly blocked and lettered in gilt, yellow advertisement endpapers printed in red and black, red sprinkled edges, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, an unusually bright, clean copy.
With front and rear advertisement endpapers, 4pp of trade advertisements following Contents, and 36pp of advertisements and publisher's catalogue bound in at rear (all advertisements in red and black). 'In this New Edition I have striven, with feminine aid of the most valuable kind, to make a few improvements upon the original model of this work, and I have infused some new and modern information which, seven years ago, did not exist' (S O Beeton). The second edition of Beeton's masterwork, revised by Samuel following Isabella's death in 1865, was first published in 1869. The present issue can be dated from internal evidence to 1880.
