8vo., First Edition, on laid paper; most attractively bound in contemporary speckled calf, sides with double Oxford frame in gilt, back with five raised bands, second compartment with red leather label framed and lettered in gilt, all other compartments toole and ruled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, a remarakbly bright, clean, crisp copy.
First edition of Sherlock's first collection of sermons, and forerunner of a well-known series of 'discourses' published across the late eighteenth century. THIS COPY WAS FORMERLY IN THE LIBRARY OF THE 3rd MARQUESS OF LONDONDERRY AND BEARS HIS FINE ENGRAVED ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE ON FRONT PASTE-DOWN. The bookplate shows the arms of Londonderry and those of his second wife Frances Anne Emily, daughter of Sir Henry Vane-Tempest. A small, neat, contemporary signature 'Henry Vane' appears on title. A PLEASING COPY WITH NOTABLE PROVENANCE.
