4 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with very numerous coloured, tinted and monochrome full-page illustrations in the text; terracotta cloth, backstrips lettered in silver, green tops, backstrips lightly sunned at extreme heads and tails else a near fine set in unclipped dustwrapper, the wrappers chipped with minor loss at heads and tails of backstrips.
Launched in 1939, 'Recording Britain' was a large-scale project aimed at capturing the face of Britain before the potentially widespread destruction of WWII. Unparalleled in scope, it remains an invaluable pictorial record although mercifully much of the anticipated ruin was forestalled. The set comprises: Vol. I: London and Middlesex; Surrey; Berkshire; Buckinghamshire; Hertfordshire; Bedfordshire; Vol. II: Essex; Suffolk; Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire; Northamptonshire and Rutlandshire; Norfolk; Yorkshire; Vol. III: Lancashire and Westmorland; Derbyshire; Cheshire and Shropshire; Staffordshire; Welsh Counties; Worcestershire; Herefordshire; Oxfordshire; Gloucestershire; Vol. IV: Wiltshire; Somerset; Cornwall; Devon; Dorset; Hampshire; Sussex; Kent. EXTREMELY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Please note that additional postage will be required for shipping outside the UK.
