2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with engraved frontispieces, 17 engraved plates and large folding map, THE MAP COLOURED BY HAND IN OUTLINE, frontispieces and plates mildly spotted (mainly marginal); firmly and attractively bound in period red half roan, marbled sides, backs with flat bands in gilt, second compartments lettered and numbered in gilt, patterned endpapers, uncut, a very good, bright, crisp copy.
Sold from an institution with presentation bookplate and press-mark on front paste-downs, and discreet blind embossed stamp on frontispieces, titles and plates. THIS COPY, BOUND COMPLETE WITH HALF-TITLES, WAS PRESENTED TO BATH PUBLIC REFERENCE LIBRARY BY MRS. MILES IN 1920 IN MEMORY OF HER HUSBAND SAMUEL BARRETT MILES. A scarce, important and well-illustrated account; Czech considers the plates of tiger hunting from howdahs 'quite striking'. Miles (1838-1914), British Army officer and dipmomat, served widely throughout Arabic-speaking countries, especially Oman, in which he was a recognised authority. His many notes were collected and published posthumously by his widow as 'The Countries and Tribes of the Persian Gulf' in 1919. A NOTABLE ASSOCIATION COPY IN BRIGHT PERIOD BINDING. VERY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. Czech p.145.
