12 vols., 8vo., on laid paper, with 12 frontispieces, series and volume titles in red and black, and 55 plates on 54; original leaf-green cloth, backs gilt extra, gilt tops (excepting one volume), uncut, some backstrips lightly faded (that of 'The Professor' rather more so) but all gilt designs and lettering entirely legible, else a very good, crisp, internally spotless set.
The edition comprises Bronte (A): The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (2 vols; 2 frontispieces); Agnes Grey (1 vol; frontispiece). Bronte (C): Jane Eyre (2 vols; 2 frontispieces and 9 plates); Shirley (2 vols; 2 frontispieces and 10 plates); Villette (2 vols; 2 frontispieces and 4 plates); The Professor (1 vol; frontispiece and 3 plates). Bronte (E): Wuthering Heights (1 vol; frontispiece and 4 plates). Mrs. Gaskell's Life of Charlotte Bronte (1 vol; frontispiece and 25 plates on 24). First issued in 1911, the Thornton edition is by far the finest twentieth century collected edition, well printed with broad margins and fine plates.
