THIS COPY WAS FORMERLY IN THE LIBRARY OF DOROTHY MAKEIG-JONES AND BEARS A LENGTHY HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. DOROTHY WAS WIFE TO CAPTAIN WILLIAM 'BILL' MAKEIG-JONES, COMMANDING OFFICER OF HMS COURAGEOUS, LOST WHEN HIS VESSEL WAS SUNK ON 17 SEPTEMBER 1939. MAKEIG-JONES WAS A CLOSE AND RESPECTED COLLEAGUE OF LORD MOUNTEVANS, SERVING AS THE LATTER'S FLAG CAPTAIN AND CHIEF OF STAFF AT SIMONSTOWN NAVAL BASE IN THE EARLY DAYS OF WWII. Following the sinking, Evans commissioned a set of medals struck at his own expense to be sent to Dorothy to replace those lost with her husband in his ship. UNCOMMON IN THIS CONDITION.
