3 vols., 8vo., Mixed Editions, with 3 portrait frontispieces (two with original tissue guards present), a coloured plate, a full-page facsimile and very numerous wood-engraved illustrations (many full-page) in the text; original blue cloth, gilt backs, gilt tops, boards of second volume lightly spotted at fore-edge else a near fine set.
With 16pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end of second and third volumes. The set comprises Vol. I: The Darwinian Theory (fourth edition, 1910); Vol. II: Post-Darwinian Questions: Heredity and Utility (third edition, 1906); Vol. III: Post-Darwinian Questions: Isolation and Physiological Selection. Arguably the author's most important work, the three volumes were first published in 1892, 1895 and 1897 respectively. The youngest of Darwin's academic colleagues, Romanes met Darwin at Cambridge after which thy remained friends for life. A staunch supporter of his mentor, he coined the term 'neo-Darwinism' and promoted the topic of evolution frequently from his position at University College London. In later years he founded the Romanes Lectures (still extant) and was pleased to note that Huxley consented to deliver the second series. A lovely set in publisher's original and uniform binding. Very scarce in anything like this condition.
