Roy. 8vo., First Edition thus, with pictorial and printed titles, 15 fine full-page coloured illustrations, and very numerous illustrations in monochrome in the text; handsomely bound in contemporary brown half morocco BY H WOOD, marbled boards, back with five raised bands, second compartment lettered and ruled in gilt, gilt top, marbled endpapers heightened with gilt, original wrappers (printed in red and black) preserved, corners very lightly frayed else a most attractive, crisp clean copy ideal as a gift or for presentation.
The binding is signed on front free endpaper verso. This splendid copy was presented as a prize in the Grand Concours Annual of the Societe Nationale des Professeurs de Francais. It was awarded in December 1890 to J W Blagden of Dulwich College.The society's fine presentation bookplate, completed in MS and with blind-embossed stamp, is tipped to front paste-down.
