3 vols., folio, with engraved portrait frontispiece and engraved sepulchral plate, neat uniform nineteenth-century inscription on blank preliminaries, one blank preliminary in first volume poorly trimmed, small marks on last two leaves of text of third volume; attractively and firmly rebound in twentieth-century oatmeal hessian, brown leather backs with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and numbered in gilt, a remarkably well-preserved, bright, crisp, clean copy.
The engraved frontispiece is by Vertue after Kneller. Third edition of Locke's collected works, following those of 1714 and 1722. 'John Locke is the most influential philosopher of modern times. His influence in the history of thought, on the way we think about ourselves and our relations to the world we live in, to God, nature and society, has been immense.
