8vo., First Edition, endpapers lightly browned; handsomely bound in full tan morocco BY BIRDSALL, boards elaborately framed and blocked in gilt, bevelled edges, back with raised bands, second compartment ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments framed and tooled in gilt with floral spray, all edges gilt, doublures richly tooled in gilt, a most attractive copy.
WITH THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE OF HENRY AND MARY PONSONBY ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER, AND ANOTHER BOOKPLATE ON FRONT PASTE-DOWN. The binding is signed on front paste-down. Quotation from 'Middlemarch' in neat contemporary hand on half-title. Long contemporary inscription in French on half-title and preceding leaf. This copy is complete with half-title but is bound without the errata leaf which is sometimes present. Henry and Mary Ponsonby were among the foremost members of Queen Victoria's court; the former as Private Secretary to Her Majesty, the latter as Maid of Honour.
