8vo., [?Second Edition], on laid paper, with fine woodcut frontispiece, and woodcut and printed titles, lengthy eighteenth century family succession on front and rear blank preliminaries, pencilled note on woodcut title; strongly bound in contemporary panelled calf, boards framed and blocked in blind, red sprinkled edges, uncut, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, boards moderately age-worn but newly furbished, a very good,crisp, clean copy in elegantly restored period binding.
With the 'Moses' frontispiece and 'Cherubim' title, and complete with final advertisement leaf (often missing). 'Eyres' in imprint should read 'Eyre'. Title of 'Private Devotions' dated 1764 but with continuous pagination. Crisp copy of one of the leading Anglican devotional works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author [by popular consensus] was a tutor to Milton and author of several other devotional works. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. ESTC T26177 (recording the first edition of 1658).
