Britain in Pictures
‘Britain in Pictures’ (BIP) is a series of 126 books published between 1941 and 1945 as an important component of Britain’s wartime propaganda. Conceived and initiated by Hilda Matheson, the series employed the best writers and artists to portray Britain, her people and their achievements in almost every aspect of everyday life. Taken as a whole, the series provides a splendid survey of British creativity, prowess and endeavour from mediaeval times to the 1940s. Unsurprisingly the series was, and is, well-loved and enthusiastically collected, although really nice copies of first impressions in bright dustwrappers are increasingly elusive.
