8 vols., roy. 8vo., First Edition, with 7 portrait frontispieces, titles in red and black, very numerous plates, and many maps and genealogical tables (a number folding); red cloth, gilt backs, red tops (a few tops unevenly faded as usual), a remarkably bright, crisp, clean set in unclipped dustwrapper (wrapper of first volume chipped at headband).
ALL WRAPPERS ARE THE PREFERRED SOLID COLOUR ISSUES OF THE UNIFORM EDITION. With neat uniform personal bookplate on front free endpapers of all but first volume. The set comprises: Vol. I: Youth 1874-1900 (1966); Vol. II: Young Statesman 1901-1914 (1967); Vol. III: 1914-1916 (1971); Vol. IV: 1917-1922 (1975); Vol. V: 1922-1939 (1976); Vol. VI: Finest Hour 1939-1941 (1983); Vol. VII: Road to Victory 1941-1945 (1986); Vol. VIII: Never Despair 1945-1965 (1988). Arguably the most important official biography of the twentieth century. The first two volumes were compiled by Winston's son Randolph; following his death in 1968 the torch passed to (later Sir) Martin Gilbert who passed the majority of his career completing the mammoth task.
