8vo., First Edition, on laid paper, with a portrait frontispiece and 10 plates, some very light offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; original buckram, gilt back, uncut, a very good, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly soiled, moderately browned at backstrip and chipped with minor loss (not affecting lettering) at head and tail of backstrip.
Viola Meynell's biography of her mother (1847-1922) is firstly a record of wide-ranging literary activity, from the days of girlhood poems, through journals and essays, to pre-eminence among the women poets of her generation. But it is also a loving portrait of a very individual woman who nurtured a secure and happy domestic life whilst at the same time enjoying lasting friendships with Patmore, Meredith, Thompson and many other literary leaders of the period. Uncommon in the dustwrapper.
