16mo., First Edition thus, with 18 engraved plates and musical scores for 23 field calls; original red morocco, sides with double frame border in blind, on upper board enclosing the royal arms and title blocked and lettered in gilt, gilt back, red edges, a remarkably bright, clean copy.
With advertisement endpapers in red and black listing the current range of HMSO military publications. This important manual, the standard reference in late Victorian infantry drill and tactics, was compiled largely by G F R Henderson at the behest of Sir Garnet Wolseley during the lead-up to the Cardwell Reforms. In this form it was variously updated and re-issued until the turn of the century. The present edition was, we believe, the last major revision before the Anglo-Boer War. The plates depict a comprehensive range of drill manoeuvres and tactical operations from digging shelter trenches to lining rifle pits. An astonishingly well-preserved copy and a rare survival.
